DEADLINES
Group Art Exhibition
Wed 22 Sep to Sun 10 Oct
Presented by The Annexe Gallery, with support from Central Market
Admission Free
Everyday we set for ourselves deadlines for a multitude of things, from work assignments to life’s ambitions. There is one deadline, however, that none of us can escape from no matter how much we procrastinate, and that is our mortality. All our endless deadlines seem an attempt to avert this final one. As artists, we dream of the day we are free to create our magnum opus, if only we have enough time, enough money, enough love. Meanwhile, we slave away at projects that enable us to survive, dealing with one inconsequential deadline after another. And sometimes we become so obsessed with simply getting by that we forget our art. Have our lines died before they had a chance to come alive? What's killed them? How can they come to life again?

b. 1989, Tan Zi Hao is a multidisciplinary artist who works mostly within his local community in Seri Kembangan. Focusing on the symptoms of postcolonial media culture and the contestation between the noumenal and the phenomenal identity portrayed by media, he realised the postmodern emphasis on “process” has fragmented our lifestyle into multiple segments. He doubts the validity of identity, of postcolonial nationhood and is confused between cultural sensitivity and insecurity.
